Our Patron Book Club joins us to discuss L. Sprague de Camp’s “The Fallible Fiend”, futtering spouses, the maps in front of fantasy novels, fleshed-out characters, missile weapons, Dave Arneson’s rules, picking spells other than Fireball, flavorful book titles, historical fiction with magic, older styles of writing, fantasy novels as reflections of their time, and much more!

What a pleasant surprise. My father was not to disturbed by the sexual humor of this book and read it aloud to me when I was 12. This is one of my favorite De Camp favorites though I also recommend the Complete Enchanter, The Goblin Tower and the Hands of Zie. Asimov, De Camp and Heinlein all worked on rocketry during WW2 but they were not the geniuses in that area. Demos is right on picking up De Camp’s interest in ancient history-I recommend The Dragon on the Ishtar Gate. If you do another Burroughs, Clarke Ashton Smith or De Camp episode I would love to come back on the show.
