Ian McGarty joins us to discuss Peter Bebergal’s “Appendix N: The Eldritch Roots of Dungeons & Dragons”, games publishing, lifting magic items from fiction, the Swords Against Darkness anthologies, skeletal vampires, Tanith Lee’s wild fiction, Elric and Moonglum, the old school D&D thief class, wanting to die a warrior’s death, the Vivimancer class, necromancer PCs, crisp mountain air, and much more!
As far as good examples of play for “What is a Role-Playing Game,” I do like some of the extensive examples of play in the Replay sections that various Japanese Tabletop RPGs that have been licensed and translated for the US have included – in particular, the replay for the Konosuba Tabletop RPG does a really good job of not just giving an example of play, but also examples of a variety of the game’s rules in action.
