Appendix N Book Club 
I am a big fan of the original REH stories (although they are products of their time), but have recently been trying to obtain the DeCamp/Carter series as well. Appendix N research, you know.
I managed to get this one a couple of months back, and re-read it for the first time since maybe 8th or 9th grade. Crom! but the descriptions of women were problematic. Cringe-worthy, really. But, at the same time, as you three pointed out, there is also a lot of potential meat for gaming proudly thrusting from those pages. There are definitely some worthy ideas to be gleaned from therein.
The description of Lin Carter as a smart man, but not a deep man, jibes with the impression I get from his work.

Lin Carter’s introduction about swords and sorcery being pure escapism just sounds like a 1971 version of “keep your SJW politics out of my videogames/movies/comic books” i.e. bog standard nerd reactionism

I read this story in Savage Sword of Conan in issues 40-43. I really enjoyed it. Carter’s portrayal of the amazon women was cringe but it is fun imaginative fantasy adventure.
It reads much better as a comic book due Roy Thomas writing it and John Buscema and Tony DeZuniga on art.
